Genetic Alliance Institutional Review Board

Overview

The Genetic Alliance Institutional Review Board (IRB) fosters research and discovery through a people-centered approach to reviewing research protocols. Under Genetic Alliance’s IRB, protocols are reviewed with an eye for harm and burden to a participant, without the authoritative paternalistic regulation of other institutions. We value protecting people by ensuring that review occurs in a timely manner, with low costs and minimal restrictions. The Genetic Alliance IRB remains mindful of the balance between regulation and support of new models. We value research that puts the interests of its research participants at the forefront.
Genetic Alliance is one of the founding members of SMART IRB (the Streamlined, Multisite, Accelerated Resources for Trials IRB Reliance platform). Launched in 2016, SMART IRB is currently funded by the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program and is free to use for any institution. SMART IRB is a platform designed to ease common challenges associated with initiating multisite research and to provide a roadmap for institutions to implement the NIH Single IRB Review policy. Investigators, study team members, and IRB/HRPP administrators can access essential education as well as flexible tools and resources designed to support the adoption and implementation of a single IRB review for a range of studies. To learn more about how you can benefit from SMART IRB and take a look at their resources, please visit their website .

Advantages of our IRB

irb-1
We offer an IRB that costs significantly less than the average academic or private institution. We want PIs to keep the focus on the research rather than the cost.
irb-2
We currently have a turnaround time around 15x faster than most universities and private institutions.
irb-3
We’ve designed self-guided and easy-to-follow templates, making it easier for those who are new to the IRB approval process.

Getting Started

For those interested in using the Genetic Alliance IRB, please take a look at our application process page to see the required documents and instructions on how to get started. Please reach out if you have any questions.

IRB Roster

Six health professionals and researchers make up the Genetic Alliance IRB. These individuals are not directly involved in any of Genetic Alliance’s approved research and serve solely as objective judges of the potential benefits and harms of proposed projects and studies. The IRB has been formally designated to approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving human beings. The IRB exists to ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of the people participating in research and studies - while supporting the advocacy community through research review processes without typical, cumbersome systems.
