Genetic Alliance Institutional Review Board
Overview
The Genetic Alliance Institutional Review Board (IRB) fosters research and discovery through a people-centered approach to reviewing research protocols. Under Genetic Alliance’s IRB, protocols are reviewed with an eye for harm and burden to a participant, without the authoritative paternalistic regulation of other institutions. We value protecting people by ensuring that review occurs in a timely manner, with low costs and minimal restrictions. The Genetic Alliance IRB remains mindful of the balance between regulation and support of new models. We value research that puts the interests of its research participants at the forefront.
Genetic Alliance is one of the founding members of SMART IRB (the Streamlined, Multisite, Accelerated Resources for Trials IRB Reliance platform). Launched in 2016, SMART IRB is currently funded by the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program and is free to use for any institution. SMART IRB is a platform designed to ease common challenges associated with initiating multisite research and to provide a roadmap for institutions to implement the NIH Single IRB Review policy. Investigators, study team members, and IRB/HRPP administrators can access essential education as well as flexible tools and resources designed to support the adoption and implementation of a single IRB review for a range of studies.
