The Genetic Alliance Institutional Review Board (IRB) fosters research and discovery through a people-centered approach to reviewing research protocols. Under Genetic Alliance's IRB, protocols are reviewed with an eye for harm and burden to a participant, without the paternalistic authoritative regulation of other institutions. We value protecting people by ensuring that review occurs in a timely manner, with low costs, and minimal restrictions. The Genetic Alliance IRB remains mindful of the balance between regulation and support of new models, ones that value patient expertise.

The board is comprised of six health professionals and researchers. These individuals are not directly involved in any of Genetic Alliance's approved research, and serve solely as objective arbiters of the potential benefits and harms of proposed projects and studies. The IRB has been formally designated to approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving human beings. The IRB exists to ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of the people participating in research and studies, while also supporting the advocacy community through research review processes without typical, cumbersome systems.
