About the Summit
The Newborn Screening Summit: Envisioning a Future for Newborn Screening took place December 7-8, 2009, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Bethesda, MD.
Over the past 10 years, newborn screening programs have expanded at lightning speed and now more than 4 million babies are screened annually. Emerging technologies promise to expand screening possibilities. Family interaction with the newborn screening system is also increasing. The Summit promoted dialogue between all stakeholders in newborn screening and identified actionable steps for the improvement of the system.
Families, healthcare providers, researchers, state program facilitators, laboratory professionals, and others visioned and strategized about the U.S. newborn screening system.
During the summit we asked:
- What is at stake for the future?
- How can we answer the call for access to information and the integration of perspectives as the newborn screening system continues to develop?
The summit was held in open space, where all stakeholders offered their experiences and resources in a transparent environment. Genetic Alliance will produce a monograph in Spring 2010 to capture major themes of the summit.
