For more than 30 years, Genetic Alliance has served the healthcare community by promoting public policies to advance healthcare, increasing efficiency and reducing obstacles in genetic research, and ensuring that all voices from the involved disease communities are heard. General Position Overview:

For Genetic Alliance, “community-led research” means more than research conducted with participants at the table. It means that communities are truly leading the research effort, empowered with infrastructure and expertise. The concept of “participants” becoming “drivers” has been core to our identity since our establishment in 1986.

Today, many communities full of people and citizen scientists conduct their own research and lead international, multi-disciplinary research initiatives. Genetic Alliance’s tools, partnerships, and projects build capacity in communities, enable new cross-sector partnerships, and place control in the hands of the people, empowering them with a greater sense of ownership over their health data. In collaboration with internal project teams and external partners, multiple the manager will work across several projects to build Genetic Alliance initiatives and capacity in community-building and engagement of people in health. Some potential projects include:

  • The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet), a groundbreaking initiative aiming to transform clinical research by engaging participants, clinicians, community providers, and health systems in collaborative partnerships to advance medical knowledge and improve health care.
  • The Platform for Engaging Everyone Responsibly (PEER), an award-winning technology registry designed to accommodate any data sharing and privacy preferences by giving individual users complete control over how their data is shared and used for research.
  • DiseaseInfoSearch, an online tool that allows individuals to locate information from a database of more than 10,000 conditions and from thousands of partners.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to organization’s overall strategy for engaging stakeholders in research and health care.
  • Write papers and reports, develop products and tools, and support partners in implementing use of Genetic Alliance tools, with a special emphasis on engagement.
  • Work with partners and communities to develop and refine tools to reach and engage participants.
  • Recommend and organize webinars to encourage sharing across communities.
  • Develop and execute engagement trainings and events with community partners.
  • Manage engagement activities for research projects, including integration and management of stakeholder teams and evaluation of stakeholder engagement.
  • Integrate community and participant feedback into digital tools and platforms.
  • Create relevant content for websites, materials, and social media platforms.
  • Draft messaging and materials to support the dissemination of research findings to target audiences.
  • Contribute meaningfully to Genetic Alliance culture and overarching mission.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master Degree in Public Health, Communications, Sociology, or related field preferred.
  • Supurb written and verbal communication skills and experience.
  • Experience in community health, outreach, advocacy, nonprofit programs, or related fields.

Additional Skills and Capabilities:

  • Experience developing plans, materials, and tools for increasing participant engagement.
  • Experience coordinating and managing projects, including timelines and scopes of work.
  • Interest in supporting research capacity through engagement activities.
  • Experience with innovative models of research and/or programs focused on consumers, patients, or advocates.
  • Interest in community organizing, network building, and partnership development.
  • Experience managing websites, social media platforms, and other digital properties.
  • Innovative and analytical thinker who is comfortable in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Superior organization and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent team player.
